The growing climate crisis, increasing wealth disparity, as well as the politics of conflict and corruption cast huge shadows over the land. These are not simply the dark days of winter, but increasingly dark times for everyone; especially for those who truly care for the souls of others and for the well-being of the sacred earth we all live upon.

The disasters of modern life are deepened by the loss of imagination about the mystery and wonder of this world and the lack of understanding of our essential place within it. We keep falling out of the living story of the world and into the shadow of humanity. Humans may be frail and easily misled, yet we belong to more than one dimension of life and the dark of the year is the traditional time to recall the inner connection between our souls and the starry universe.

Ancient people imagined that the extremes of darkness harbored a timeless moment of stillness as the sun seems to stop just in time, before the gloom becomes too great to recover from. Traditional cultures around the world imagined that the midwinter sun needed conscious help from people in order to avoid being devoured by the expanse of darkness that nips at the edges of life.

The “holidays” were more distinctly the holy days, as the rebirth of the sun at solstice was reflected in the potential awakening and inner illumination of the heart and soul of each person. For, each soul harbors an “inner sun,” a deep and giving self that is also a light found inside darkness. The sense of holy days and hidden light served to remind everyone of the sacredness of life as well as our innate connection to the world’s capacity to renew itself in the darkest hours.

The instinct for warmth and care, for love and generosity in the dark of the year arises naturally from the soul’s longing to feel the holiness and interconnectedness of life. In the midst all the anxieties and pressures of modern life, it is a sense of timelessness and sacredness that is most needed. The solstice presents a cosmological truth about both life and light; it reflects a human capacity to assist in the renewal of life despite and because of the darkness all around us.

In facing the darkness together we can find and touch again the divine spark of life as each soul can connect through prayer and song to the living earth and the Soul of the World.

May the holidays be holy days for you; may the light of inspiration find you and the warmth of love embrace you and yours.

Wishing you peace, restoration and renewal,
Michael Meade and Mosaic Staff

Young Woman's Essay Reflections on Girls Group

https://www.loveyournature.com/journal/young-womans-essay-reflections-on-girls-group

https://www.loveyournature.com/journal/young-womans-essay-reflections-on-girls-group#comments

Uncategorized

So grateful for one of our long time girls sharing a piece of one of her college essays - about her years in girls group! I also learned from others in the group that when I articulated my own stories in a vulnerable way, it encouraged the others to be vulnerable, too. Before that, I didn't know that I could empower others to be their true selves just by being authentic myself...

In our group, we talk about what’s important to us, not what’s trending. Something about hoping for more than ordinariness feels like a set up. You dream beautiful dreams and then you get rained out or your kid gets sick... sometimes, life is just like that. Then a beloved surprises you with flowers, or a long distance visit. Life is like that too. Or maybe it's that my birthday is sister to Autumn, the often emotional turning towards the dark, swampy, rich harvests and shedding skins. Or maybe it's that my birthday is my grandmother's, so no birthday is ever celebrated without loss.

This past year has been one of the sweetest, and one of the hardest of my life. I have blossomed into myself as a mama, partner, guide, and friend. I have learned more about how deeply I grieve, and in turn touched a deeper love. I have held great faith, protected my optimism, and opened the door again and again to hope. I have felt scared and alone, in this time of the "broken village". I work really f*ing hard, on a lot of levels. I am SO grateful for my life.

It's been a hard year, and a wonderful year. I haven't checked in about my son for a while, well, because it's really vulnerable. Last January he got sick, then we got food poisoning, then in February he developed a cross eye. (Potentially all related or unrelated) By April it transformed into an extremely rare eye condition called Cyclic Esotropia. Short story is his left eye switches from being totally normal, to crossed, every 24 hours. So every other day he's totally fine. And every other day, he's got a cross eye.

The process has been filled with love, struggle, and mystery...

The cycles follow an invisible circadian rhythm that we all live by. She was responding to my ambitious idealism (currently getting worn out of me by motherhood!) reminding me that though I might have the vision to do it all, it would not be wise. She shares the same name as my son. I smile now, a bit heartbroken, seeking the light in all things, wondering if there is something to that now. The thing is, once you're a mom, it's never enough. It's enough when it comes to work, to home, to how I look. Gone are the days. But when it comes to your kid ~ relentless. It's like, I cannot rest until his eye is healed. But I have to, or it won't. It's just, a lot. We weren't designed for this. I'm sure of it.

A wish that's grown in me, is how much I want real life contact with people who love us and want to hug us and play with us and live life together, who deeply know this witch-y semi-cross-eyed cool dude and his magical overwhelmed mama. People we see more than once every few months. People to bake muffins for and have late night tea with. People who just stop by. People who send us love notes in the mail. People who can handle me breaking down crying for ten minutes, then crack up, and rush off to the next thing, 'cause that's how it is... but at least we saw each other! People who want to be with us, make a village with us ~ without intricate advanced planning. Perhaps / guaranteed, this is missing for so many of us, certainly for me.

So, what's my birthday wish? I usually have some epic world-saving wish for the earth. I still do. But this year, this year I just want my son's eyes to heal. I want you to know me, know us, really, and wish for this too. I want his body to do whatever it needs to do to heal, now. I want us both to be free of this spell, to learn the lessons it is offering, and move forward with the wisdom, without the illness. This feels like a huge ask. I don't think I've ever made a birthday wish for myself. I almost don't feel worthy of this wish. But I am. We are.

Thank you dear ones, our near and far beloveds, for holding this simple, mortal wish for my son and family. And thank you everyone who has been with us, on all the levels. It means the world to me.

I love you,
Mama Emily

Photos by the lovely Brooke Porter, who captured beautifully the spirit that dances Shaye and I into our special little love world.

When Is It Ever Enough?

https://www.loveyournature.com/journal/when-is-it-ever-enough

https://www.loveyournature.com/journal/when-is-it-ever-enough#comments

Uncategorized

This Summer, I had the honor of attending a retreat for mothers from around the country, as part of a year-long commitment to a Motherworthy group I meet with weekly, online. I've been following closely the story of his younger brother's cancer, and this Summer, his brother passed. During the Council, this beloved elder shared a gem I will never forget (in fact I'm posting this on my mirror to read daily!)

Of all the things he could share about his brother dying, he said,

"Love and Grief - they are the same thing." As simple as this seems, it hit the center of my gift/wound story. By the time we enter our teen years, our culture has already set us up to feel ashamed of our bodies, our social abilities, our successes, our sexuality, and our pleasure. A recent survey of 1,993 teens and adults ages 13-64 revealed that, on average, Americans say they first remember feeling ashamed of their bodies between 13 and 14 years old. But with every generation, that self-consciousness strikes at a younger age. In the survey, teens ages 13-17 reported that their first bout of body shame occurred as young as 9 years old.

The good news is that there is a way through to the other side. Giving voice to our shame and to the stories we have about ourselves inevitably unravels the cycle of secrecy and isolation. Our stories matter. We heal ourselves by sharing our stories and by hearing others’ stories. We heal by bringing empathy to the places in ourselves that feel the most unlovable.

May we continue to find our way to more freedom and joy… as young girls and women. May we be supported as we do the bold and tender work of looking within. May we learn to resource ourselves from the inside out and through radical connection to each other, rather than from toxic external conditions that teach us to conform and be complaisant.

For all of us sitting with these questions: Am I enough?
