Arts . Mindfulness . Ecology .
Seasonal Class Series & Special Workshops The A.M.E. program explores arts education, inner awareness, and the natural world. We strive to illuminate the connection between natural systems and creative processes in human beings. Classes have been hosted by public, private, home & charter schools, as well as by non-profits and retreat centers. Using a variety of materials and techniques, the program is designed to offer tools that combine active learning with moments of stillness and reflection. Curriculum supports social-emotional development, listening skills and self-awareness. We will spend our days doing a variety of activities designed to the season and children's interests. In outdoor classes, we move our bodies and engage with the elements around us. We explore what we notice in our journals with sketchbook meditations. We balance games that build nature awareness with the truly necessary play kids invent. The group becomes a community of children discovering, creating, and having fun together. Art students have participated in gallery exhibits, public installations and collaborations with local artists. We describe our environment with all sorts of materials, nurturing gratitude for and understanding of the world around us. We get curious and learn how to listen. As mentors, we try to create a space for the unfolding of inner and outer discovery, diving into the wonder alongside them. We invite moments of deep connection and imagination. We nurture a place within that each child can continually return to. Students learn mindfulness techniques as life skills; training attention, balance and compassion. Mindfulness is a practice of walking a trail many times, as it becomes established within us. By approaching mindfulness as listening, as something we encounter every day but rarely learn how to do, students of any age can become empowered to recognize, communicate, and regulate their emotions and resolve their own conflicts. We explore the foundations through activities that invite the magic of silence, using age appropriate mindfulness practices such as mindful eating, mindful listening, mindful movement interwoven with mindfulness related stories and games. We will draw on SEL curriculum developed by John Kabat Zinn's MBSR, Mindful Schools, the Toolbox Project, and others. Please contact if you are interested in this program through a charter school. |
